Oral Exams & Hygiene Education

At Dogwood Pediatric we make education a priority. Our knowledgeable staff will show you children proper techniques for brushing and flossing. Our dental hygienists will perform your child’s teeth cleanings to remove stains, plaque and tartar from teeth. We also recommend special preventative treatments, such as fluoride and sealants that will benefit your child’s oral health.
What to expect at your oral exam

As your child grows, abnormalities may pop up from time to time. Our staff will look for any of these problems they may arise. Our pediatric dentist will check your child’s teeth, jaw and oral tissues. Both primary and baby teeth will be checked to make sure your child is healthy and progressing normally. Our dentist and staff will answer any and all questions, as well as fully explain any finding from the check-up.

Fun!

Our office is known as a place of both comfort and fun for your children. We pride ourselves on making their experience educational and full of fun. We know that some children deal with anxiety when they come to the dentist and we are trained how to effectively calm their nerves and even make the dentist something they look forward to. We aim to make our office a peaceful place where you and your child feel like family.

At what age should I bring my child to their first exam?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling an initial exam after your baby’s first tooth erupts or no later than your infant’s first birthday.

What should I do to prepare my child for their exam?

Schedule the appointment at a time of day when he or she is well rested and most likely to cooperate. Let your child know the dentist will use special tools to keep his teeth healthy. Avoid sharing any negative words or experiences with your child.

Routine dental cleanings are essential for preventive care. In general, we recommend cleanings twice a year for all pediatric patients in our care.
